In the Spring of 2021, I had decided to add a second breed of goats to our farm. After going back and forth between different breeds, I finally decided on the little butterfat powerhouse of the dairy goat world, the Nigerian Dwarf. I loved the idea of feed efficiency, option to breed year-round, and the extremely high butterfat content of a Nigerian's milk. Spring 2022 is our first Nigerian kidding season with only 2 does. We plan to utilize Artificial Insemination, DNA Typing, or Alpha S-1 Casein Testing our Nigerian Dwarf herd like we have with our Alpines. We did have a Linear Appraisal in 2022 and we will be milk testing our Nigerian ladies in 2023. Our focus with this herd is to have beautiful correct type within breed standards and lots rich milk for the pail. While the Nigerian colors are exciting and fun, we will not be basing any breeding decisions on color of eyes or coat patterns.

Nigerian Breed Standard

"The Nigerian Dwarf is a miniature breed of dairy goat originating in West Africa and developed in the United States. The balanced proportions of the Nigerian Dwarf give it the appearance of the larger breeds of dairy goats, but does stand no more than 22.5" (57cm) and bucks no more than 23.5" (60cm). Any color or combination of colors is acceptable. The medium length ears are erect and alert. The face is either straight or dished, and the hair is short and fine.."
