Our little family...

started out on our small land plot at the beginning of 2016. My husband farms for a local farmer in the Flint Hills. Living in a rural area opened up new doors to learn about animal husbandry and growing our own produce. We had had small gardens in the past, but never to the point of depending on what we produced more than depending on the store. I have always loved having animals around and thought adding chickens would be a fun venture as well as a start of egg production. We started out with 4 little baby chicks. The assortment of brown egg layers were the beginning of a new way of living for our family. Four chicks turned into ten chicks. Ten chicks turned into a large flock of chickens and ducks. Toward the end of the first year we butchered our first chicken for meat. The rooster had started getting an attitude with us every time we would go outside and we had had enough. The farm fresh chicken was unlike any other chicken we had ever eaten. After that, we decided store bought chicken just didn't cut it anymore. In 2017, we dove into raising our own meat on our farm. We added rabbits and 15 butcher chickens, but they weren't the only new venture in our lives that year. Early in the year we were blessed with our first child. Our daughter changed the way we thought of our food. We became more conscious of the nutrition and it's source in which we nourished our bodies. Did we really want all of the artificial ingredients, preservatives, and who knows what else going into our food? No. We started figuring out ways to eat the best we could. We feel like it is important for our family to grow up being in touch with our food. I grew a huge garden and butchered our meat that year. The rabbits never got to the point of breeding as we found out we would be moving at the beginning of the upcoming year. We sold them all to a woman who wanted to raise rabbits herself. I sold over forty pullets and a couple ducks to local people to thin down my flock for the move. Coming into 2018, we added a dairy cow to our family. We felt that dairy animals would fill in the gaps of our own food production. We are currently in the process of moving and fixing up our new place. We can't wait to see what the future brings to our little farm.

Update August 2022

We have come so far and changed our direction quite a lot since the early days. Now we are primarily raising registered dairy goats! While we love our jersey cows, we have to admire the efficiency of dairy goats. With the increasing cost behind feeding and maintaining livestock, our goats have continued to provide our family with wonderful milk at a fraction of the cost that a dairy cow can. The goats have also been great to have around our kids. They are so gentle and easy to handle. We plan to continue with the goats and as our human kids get older start showing.
